Summer Groups 2013

We are pleased to be offering the following Summer groups. If you are interested in attending, please contact us at (604) 771-2305 or email janine@westcoastspeech.com. If your child is not a current client we will schedule you for a no charge intake consultation prior to placing your child in a group. All classes are one hour in length (this includes a 10 minute parent talk time at the end of the session). Class require a MINIMUM of 2 clients to run and a MAXIMUM of 4 clients. Articulation Camp

Bosko will be providing an intensive, daily, one hour camp from August 26-30 that will target articulation sounds. Children will attend each day that week for 60 minutes. We will group children based on age and sounds that they would like to clean up. Using cutting edge Ultrasound technology, participants will learn and practice speech gestures needed in order to produce the target sounds appropriately. They will learn how to place and shape their tongue to make sounds. The number of participants will be kept low (up to 3 children). Please let us know if you are interested. $80 PER hour SUMMER CAMP This camp is still in the works and will be geared towards children entering Kindergarten. If interested, please let us know. 

TUESDAYS

Early Language Group For Parents/Caregivers

This group is geared for parents/caregivers of children from 1.5-2.5 years of age. The focus of the group will be to teach parents/caregivers a variety of strategies which will help make learning language easier for your child. We will demonstrate the strategies, teach you how to use them, and then provide you with guided practice as you use them in the group with your child.  We will have activities set up that will allow you to practice these strategies and get comfortable and effective using them. Some of the strategies that we may cover are: 1. Play Face to Face. 2. Follow your Child’s Lead. 3. Observe your Child. 4. Simplify. 5. Add one word. 6. Repeat. 7. Use Emphasis and Exaggeration. 8. Offer Choices. 9. Interpret. 10. Use action words

Social Language within the Zones of Regulation (R) 1 spot left

This group will introduce the four zones and the children will learn to recognize or identify their zone at any given time. They will gain insight into how their behaviour changes how other people think and feel about them. They will understand how their ability to regulate themselves affects their days as a whole. The children will learn to identify triggers that lead them to the Yellow or Red Zone. We will teach the children various tools that are calming or alerting. We will then teach them why, when and how to use the tools to influence their zones and how to integrate these tools into their every day life.

DATES: Tuesdays 3:30 – 4:30; 7 weeks (July 2, 9, 16, August 6, 13, 20, 27)

AGE: 8-9 year olds

Identifying Emotions in Stories  This class is full

This 5 week group will focus on understanding characters’ emotions in stories to increase reading comprehension. Using a Social Thinking approach, we will learn strategies to identify the emotions of characters in stories. We will make smart guesses about characters’ thoughts and feelings which can help us guess what their plans might be. The goal of this group will be to go beyond reciting the words on the page to understanding stories more fully. This class will be only 5 sessions.

DATES: Tuesdays from 4:00 – 5:00 (July 2, 9 16, 23, and 30th)

AGE: 9-10 year olds

Figurative Language Idioms, metaphors, similes.  1 spot left

These are all types of figurative language that are difficult for some students to figure out. We will have seven classes to work on trying to “figure it out”. A variety of books will be used during these classes to help the students learn.

WEDNESDAYS

Empathy 2 spots left

Empathy is the ability to understand what others feel or to perceive and understand the experience of another person. This social emotion brings a emotional connection to others and has three important components: cognitive (perspective-taking), affective (emotional matching) and behavioural (displays of concern).This group will focus on teaching the students to understand what empathy is. It will delve into numerous emotions. There will be a lot of role playing during this class (in a non-threatening way). We will also use movies to look at emotions and empathy.

DATES: Wednesdays 3:30 – 4:30; 7 weeks (July 3, 10, 17, August 7, 14, 21, 28)

Social Thinking Group 2 spots left

This group is for children who have social communication delays. We will target social communication goals using parts of the Think Social! curriculum designed by Michelle G. Winner, www.socialthinking.com. These would include concepts such as expected and unexpected behaviours, whole body listening, keeping your body and brain in the group, and learning how to become a “social detective”.

DATES: Wednesdays 5:00-6:00pm; 5 weeks (July 3, 10, 17, August 7, 14,)

AGES: 6-7 years old

Social Thinking and Narrative Language Group (BRAIDY)CANCELLED

This is a weekly, one hour class that focuses on improving children’s oral language development through the use of Braidy, the Story Braid. Braidy helps link language development to literacy for children from preschool through 3rd Grade by providing a means to explicitly teach and model literate language, also known as Accountable Talk. Braidy was designed to introduce narrative language development to children via visual, tactile and kinesthetic modalities. In addition to working on the narrative language with the use of Braidy, significant focus will be put on improving social communication skills. Techniques that were developed by Michelle Garcia Winner (www.socialthinking.com ) will also be used throughout this group. This group is designed for 6-7 year olds.

DATES: Wednesdays 4:40 – 5:40; 7 weeks (July 3, 10, 17, August 7, 14, 21, 28) AGE: 6-7 year olds

THURSDAYS

Social Thinking and Problem Solving Group for Teenagers – 6 weeks FULL

This group is for teenagers who have social communication delays. We will target social communication goals using parts of the curriculum designed by two experts: Michelle Garcia Winner www.socialthinking.com and Scott Bellini (Building Social Relationships). The course will touch on the following topics: How to make and maintain friendships, how to initiate and end a conversation, managing voice volume and tone, how to handle peer conflict and self regulation skills.

DATES: Thursdays 5:00-6:00pm; 6 weeks (July 18, 25, August 1, 15, 22, 29)

AGES: 13-16

SATURDAYS

ARTICULATION GROUPS

We would love to offer some articulation groups if there is enough interest. Please contact us if you are interested and we will organize groups to meet on a weekly basis.
