Phonemic Awareness Group – Tuesdays 5:15-6:15
When learning to read, some children have difficulty remembering what sound goes with what letter, even with repeated practice. This group is for children in Grades 1 and 2 who are struggling readers. In the lessons, we will emphasize the link between reading and speech, which is often missing from phonics instruction. (For example, we will teach that the sounds /p/ and /b/ are made by putting your lips together.) We will cover all the English consonant and vowel sounds with the aim of helping the students become better decoders. Through fun activities and rhymes, we will solidify the the connection between hearing a sound, saying a sound, and recognizing it in print.
