We have a few spaces left in our groups that will be running from January until June 2014.  If you are interested, please give our office a call and we will arrange an initial consultation for your child to determine which group he or she would be best suited for.

We have also added a few more groups so please check them out.

Winter Groups 2014

We are pleased to be offering the following groups.  Groups will begin the first week of January and will run until the end of June 2014. If you are interested in attending, please contact us at (604) 771-2305 or email janine@westcoastspeech.com.  If your child is not a current client we will schedule you for a no charge intake consultation prior to placing your child in a group.  All classes are one hour in length (this includes a 10 minute parent talk time at the end of the session). Class require a MINIMUM of 2 clients to run and a MAXIMUM of 4 clients.  Please have a look at our website www.westcoastspeech.com to see availability.

MONDAYS:

Social Thinking and Problem Solving Group  Availability  0 spots

This group is for children with social communication challenges. We will target social communication goals using parts of the curriculum designed by two experts: Michelle Garcia Winner www.socialthinking.com and Scott Bellini (Building Social Relationships). The course will touch on the following topics: How to make and maintain friendships, how to initiate, maintain and end conversations, how to use appropriate voice volume and tone, how to handle peer conflict and finally how to self-regulate.  Course participants will be given homework, and be instructed on the use of video as a therapy tool. Every session will include a parent debriefing & discussion round at the end.

DATES: Mondays 5:00-6:00pm

Social Thinking Groups

This group is for children who have social communication delays. We will target a variety of social communication goals using parts of the curriculum designed by Michelle G. Winner, www.socialthinking.com.  To quote Michelle Garcia Winner (from her website : “Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions.”Depending on the children in the group, this might include concepts such as expected and unexpected behaviours, whole body listening, whole body talking, body and brain in the group.  Some of the groups will also touch on Michelle G. Winner’s Superflex ideas and work on how to regulate oneself to ensure that people are having good thoughts about us.  For the older groups we will begin to explore friendships.

Social Language Group

This group is for children who have social communication delays. We will target a variety of social communication goals using parts of the curriculum designed by Michelle G. Winner, www.socialthinking.com.  To quote Michelle Garcia Winner (from her website) “Social thinking is what we do when we interact with people: we think about them. And how we think about people affects how we behave, which in turn affects how others respond to us, which in turn affects our own emotions.”Depending on the children in the group, this might include concepts such as expected and unexpected behaviours, whole body listening, whole body talking, body and brain in the group.  We will also discuss some of the Unthinkables from the Michelle Garcia Winner’s Superflex program.

Social and Narrative Language Group Availability: 2 spots

Learning to tell and understand stories is an important development in connecting language, thinking, and social skills. Using methods, concepts and activities from several sources, including Story Grammar Marker and Michelle Garcia Winner’s Social Thinking programs, students will focus on improving their social language skills, such as perspective taking, recognizing the emotions and motivations of others, and figurative language. In addition, we will focus on narrative (storytelling and re-telling) language using literature and social group interactions to develop these important skills.

DATES: Wednesdays 5:00 – 6:00

AGE: 7-9

 THURSDAYS:

This group is for children who have social communication delays. We will use parts of the social learning curriculum designed by Michelle G. Winner, www.socialthinking.com. Depending on the children in the group, this will include concepts such as expected and unexpected behaviors, whole body listening, and keeping our body and brain in the group.  Sessions will also touch on Michelle G. Winner’s Superflex ideas and work on how to regulate oneself to ensure that people are having good thoughts about us. Course participants will be given homework, and be instructed on the use of video as a therapy tool. Every session will include a parent debriefing & discussion round at the end.

AGES: 9-10

Social Thinking and Problem Solving Group for Teenagers  Availability: 2 spots

This group is for teenagers who have social communication delays. We will target social communication goals using parts of the curriculum designed by two experts: Michelle Garcia Winner www.socialthinking.com and Scott Bellini (Building Social Relationships). The course will touch on the following topics: How to make and maintain friendships, how to initiate and end a conversation, managing voice volume and tone, how to handle peer conflict and self regulation skills.  Course participants will also be instructed on the use of video as a therapy tool.

AGES: 13-16

COST: $90 PER hour

 FRIDAYS:

Narrative Language Group Availability: 0 spots

This group is for children who have expressive language delays and need support for narrative development.  We will focus on improving descriptive and narrative language using activities from several sources, including Story Grammar Marker®  (http://mindwingconcepts.com/).    Story Grammar Marker®  incorporates MindWing’s patented icons to give children a visual, kinaesthetic tool for help with “WH” questions and common graphic organizers.

DATES: Fridays  4:30-5:30pm
